Hunter's Ambulance EMS Explorer Post181 offers co-ed scouts program
Article from the Record Journal 11-28-02

The goal of the National Learning for Life Explorer Program gives young adults the opportunity to evaluate certain career opportunities.

This program is co-ed and offered through the Boys Scouts of America. Hunter's Ambulance Service, along with other emergency medical services, police departments and fire departments throughout the state and our country have established Explorer posts.

Explorer Post 181 was established several years ago has been reorganized to meet our current needs. "Our Emergency Medical Service Post gives children and young adults from the ages of 12 - 20 the opportunity to learn and work alongside EMT's paramedics, and emergency dispatchers," states John Gopoian, the newly-appointed adult post advisor.

Besides being a paramedic himself, Gopoian currently is the corporate facilities and equipment Manager for Hunter's Ambulance Service Inc.

The Explorer program emphasizes on learning and teaching career opportunities, life skills, service learning, character, education and leadership experience. "Besides fitting in time to have fun (recently enjoyed the Haunted Graveyard at Lake Compounce) the kids have already learned a tremendous amount" said Gopoian. "This group of kidsis motivated and ready and willing to learn more. My job is to advise and be there for them."

The kids elected their own post president, vice-president and secretary. They run the meetings the same way Boy Scout troops do. They are also in charge of electing what types of community service to perform within the community, fundraising and other activities.

When asked why they joined, the post members have replied, "To become an EMT and to learn more about the medical field, to help people when they're in trouble, the feeling of helping people and to learn CPR."

For further information on joining our post feel free to stop in at 450 W. Main St., Meriden Hunter's Vehicle and Education Resource Center, on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. or call (203)514 - 5142 or contact the Connecticut Yankee Council Boy Scouts of America (203) 876 - 6868.
